Dyslexia Screening

Insight Dyslexia Services offers dyslexia screening for children and young people where there are concerns that they may be showing characteristics associated with dyslexia, but where a full diagnostic assessment may not yet be considered appropriate or necessary. The screening provides an initial indication of the learner’s strengths and areas of difficulty and can help determine whether further investigation through a comprehensive diagnostic assessment would be beneficial. It can therefore provide a useful first step for parents, schools and other professionals who would like to explore their concerns before committing to a full assessment. Where the screening indicates that a full diagnostic assessment would be appropriate, the £50 screening fee will be deducted from the cost of the full diagnostic assessment, should this be undertaken with Insight Dyslexia Services within an agreed period.

 Specialist Teaching

Following a diagnosis of dyslexia, Insight Dyslexia Services provides specialist teaching and support within school, helping to ensure that recommendations arising from the diagnostic assessment are translated into effective, practical support.

Individual 1:1 teaching is tailored to the child’s specific profile of strengths and areas of need. Sessions use structured, personalised and multi-sensory approaches to develop literacy skills, build confidence and support the individual to become a more independent learner.

Support can also be provided in collaboration with teachers, teaching assistants and other school staff. This may include modelling effective strategies, sharing practical approaches and providing guidance to help staff confidently support the child’s needs within the classroom and across the wider school environment.

Insight Dyslexia Services also provides CPD and training for school staff, including presentations and input at staff meetings. Training can be tailored to the needs of the school and may focus on developing an understanding of dyslexia, identifying effective classroom strategies and supporting staff to embed appropriate approaches consistently throughout the school day.

Dyslexia Diagnostic Assessments

Insight Dyslexia Services provides comprehensive diagnostic dyslexia assessments, followed by a detailed report of approximately 26 pages. Each assessment provides a clear profile of the individual’s strengths and areas of difficulty, together with personalised recommendations to support their learning and wellbeing.

Assessments are carried out by Paula Taylor, Specialist Teacher (SpLD – Dyslexia), AMBDA and Assessment Practising Certificate (APC) holder. All assessments and reports are completed in accordance with the professional standards required for APC holders.

Reports are suitable for Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) purposes, where appropriate. Please note that assessments are currently available for children and young people up to the age of 18 years and 11 months.

Assessments take approximately three hours and can be carried out in the individual’s home, at school (with school agreement), or at the Insight Dyslexia Services setting. A comprehensive written report is provided within two weeks of the assessment. Feedback can also be provided to parents and school staff, where required, to help ensure that the findings and recommendations are fully understood and can be effectively implemented.

Alongside diagnostic assessment, Insight Dyslexia Services offers specialist teaching, tutoring and CPD for parents and school staff. This can provide valuable support in putting assessment recommendations into practice and developing appropriate strategies to meet the individual’s needs.

The full cost of a diagnostic dyslexia assessment and comprehensive report is £550.

Visual Stress

Insight Dyslexia Services provides visual stress screening to explore whether a child or young person experiences symptoms of visual discomfort or stress when reading. The screening is designed to identify whether the use of a coloured overlay may make reading more comfortable or support visual processing. It is a general screening assessment and is not intended to provide a medical diagnosis.

As part of the screening, the individual has the opportunity to try a range of coloured overlays to identify whether a particular colour appears to make reading more comfortable. Following the screening, an A4 coloured overlay and coloured reading ruler are provided, together with practical recommendations for adjusting screen and background colours when using computers, tablets and other digital devices.

Please note that Insight Dyslexia Services does not provide diagnostic assessment for Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome (Irlen Syndrome), as this requires assessment by an appropriately trained and qualified practitioner. Where the screening indicates that further specialist investigation may be appropriate, parents will be advised to seek an assessment from a suitably qualified practitioner.
